About the Book

This book discusses the theory of bridge bidding for advanced players, with emphasis on the principles that need to underpin an effective bidding system. These include the concepts of Useful Space, Relays, Transfers, Dialogue Bidding, as well as the conflicting needs for a system that is robust, antagonistic, and also accurate. The ideas are illustrated with dozens of example hands from championship play, showing how these principles work in practice. The book will appeal to serious tournament players.

Critic's Viewpoint

"A terrific look at what bidding tries to do and it might best do it. Highly recommended!"
- BRIDGE Magazine

"For a long time, the theory of building, evaluating and comparing bidding systems has been a neglected subject in the bridge-literature. In Building a Bidding System, written by Roy Hughes, the discussion is aimed at helping the advanced/expert bridge player to choose among various systems. But, it is also a guide how to design your own bridge-system. This outstanding book will undoubtedly become a classic on this topic."
- Frank van Wezel, Pegasus Bridge, De Koerswijzer, de Kaartlezer en Tournament Bridge

"An outstanding discussion of virtually all the issues that anyone who is serious about bidding should think about when designing a system from scratch or choosing what to play from among the many systems alredy on offer. I like this book for many reasons, in particular the way that the author shows how theory matters: bidding theory is not esoteric or irrelevant, and understanding it and thinking about its application can be worthwhile for all serious players. A book I wish I had written."
- Australian Bridge

"We heartily recommend Roy Hughes' intriguing new book about bidding. The book as a whole is for advanced players, but it includes all sorts of interesting topics that are useful for any player."
- Bridge Today

"I wish I'd written this book, but Roy Hughes beat me to it.  In simple yet elegant prose, the author provides deep understanding of the principles underlying system choices.  I found little with which to disagree.  Despite his appreciation for fancy methods, Hughes displays a healthy respect for old-fashioned, natural bidding.  The book will help not only the few who design systems and conventions but also the many who must choose among the wide variety of methods touted by others."
- The Bridge World

"A brilliant discussion of the theory of bidding for advanced and expert players.  The book is unique, thought-provoking and beautifully crafted.  Reading it gives you the sense that it was a labor of love for Hughes.  A+ for a serious player, C+ for an average one."
- ACBL Bulletin

"Unique in bridge literature...What could have been a dry subject is brought to life by Hugh's excellent, conversational writing style. This is a book every serious partnership should examine."
- International Bridge Press Association

"Ideally, this book should be sold in pairs; one for you, and one for your partner."
- The Denver Post

"If you've ever thought seriously about how a bidding system can best be constructed, you will find this book both interesting and thought provoking. Reading this highly articulate book will deepen your appreciation for the skills required to develop an effective bidding system."
- Belleville Intelligencer
