About the Book

Most bridge books ignore the fact that bridge is a game between opponents, simply teaching players how to strive for theoretical perfection in bidding and play.  Dan Romm isn't interested in that - he's interested in winning, which is something he has done for more than forty years against the best players around.  Romm also isn't very interested in tournaments - mostly he plays for money; he plays with and against world champions, and is a consistent winner.  He treats bridge as a four-person competition, not as a one or two-person mathematical exercise.  Psychology, deception, and misdirection are among a host of (legal!) tactics that the reader can learn to use himself, on the way to winning more often.

Critic's Viewpoint

"Unlike most bridge authors, Romm has not spent his time winning championships; he has spent time winning money at rubber bridge. Now he tells you how to do it. Romm's biases become evident early in the book since he spends as much time discussing his first tip, psychology, as he does discussing the other four (planning, technique, adaptability and judgment). Like another West Coast writer, Marshall Miles, Romm is controversial - not everyone will agree with all his ideas. Nonetheless, his ideas are worth considering and his book provides an informative read, especially if you heed Romm's own advice: "...before you either accept or reject my techniques, I suggest that you try them and analyze them for yourself."
- The Belleville Intelligencer

"We recommend this - it is a very different style of book, full of pragmatic advice and valuable tips."
- Paul Lavings of Postfree Bridge Books, Australia

"That title should attract a lot of attention from prospective purchasers, including bridge teachers. While many of the ideas presented certainly are stressed by all competent teachers, Romm's clarifications of many techniques are exceptionally well presented. The style is entertaining, and the many anecdotes and examples hands make the book very readable."
- American Bridge Teachers Association

"The author lets it all hang out, and his cheeky, jaunty, raffish yet sunny personality shines through. Romm regales us with deals illustrating the remarkable table feel that enables him to give comeuppance to better-known opponents he dares to name."
- The Bridge World

"At the end of the book he recapitulates his 52 tips. I would not subscribe to them all, but many of them are just excellent. If you still have something to learn, read this book."
- Jon Sveindahl, Norway

"If you have almost stopped reading about bridge because everyone regurgitates the same ideas, this book could be for you. The author, a highly successful player at the rubber bridge table, gives his unique insight into the game."
- Julian Pottage
